RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
