The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
