Users Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
